Translator’s note: Shaykh al-Albaani (rahimahullaah) mentioned that there are some objections to the book Madaarij us-Saalikeen, such as having a trace of Sufism, as Ibn ul-Qayyim wrote it before the Salafi Manhaj became clear to him [refer to silsilat ul-hudaa wa nnoor tape no. 437]; however, the Arabic text for the following translation has been checked and approved by Shaykh Maahir al-Qahtaanee (hafidhahullaah)

“Complaining (to Allaah) does not contradict patience”

Shaykh Ibn Qayyim aj-Jawziyyah (rahimahullaah) comments:

“And complaining to Allaah, ‘azza wa jal, does not contradict patience. For indeed Ya’qoob, ‘alayhi ssalaam, promised to have good patience, and if a Prophet promises, he doesn’t break it. Then he said: ‘I only complain of my grief and sorrow to Allaah.’ Likewise Ayyub – Allaah informed that He found him to be patient, despite his saying: ‘Distress has seized me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who show mercy.’ Rather, complaining about Allaah contradicts patience, not complaining to Allaah, as one saw a man complaining to another of his need, so he said: ‘You are complaining about the One who has mercy on you to the one who doesn’t have mercy on you?'”
