“Allaah will grant, after hardship, ease”
~ Surat ut-Talaaq, 65:7

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) comments:

“Will this straitened (circumstance) remain? No. {Allaah will grant, after hardship, ease}. Just wait for the relief and be truthful with Allaah, and {Allaah will grant, after hardship, ease} and {Indeed with every hardship will be ease, indeed with every hardship will be ease}. This promise is only for the one who waits for the relief from Allaah and trusts in Allaah’s promise. But the person for whom Allaah makes (something) difficult, and he despairs of His Mercy and thinks that relief is unlikely – refuge is sought in Allaah – then the situation will not be made easy for this person.”

“How does a Muslim deal with trials?”

Shaykh Muhammad Sa’eed Raslaan (hafidhahullaah) comments:

“The third step is that a person examines himself, (asking) why was he afflicted? Why was he afflicted? There must be some fault.

So if a Muslim is put to trial with adversity, it is upon him to reflect on his life in the present and the past, and to also look at his intention for the future: what will he do in the time to come? And he should examine, and know – as Allaah, jallat qudratuh said – that {whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself}. So he should hasten to search for his faults because his being ignorant of himself is one of his greatest sins and his being ignorant of his sins is the greatest sin. A believer has a self-reproaching soul. It reproaches with regard to evil (and says) ‘why did you do that?’ and it reproaches with regard to good (and says) ‘why don’t you do much of it?’ So it reproaches in the case of both sinning and obedience.

Following from that, he should immediately resort to sincere repentance, purifying himself from sins and seeking much forgiveness (of Allaah). Repentence makes the repenter one of those whom Allaah, ‘azza wa jal, loves: {Truly, Allaah loves those who turn to Him in repentance and loves those who purify themselves}. And seeking forgiveness – as clarified to us by the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving – has a great effect in bringing provision and repelling trials. He, ta’aala, said: {“I said: ‘Ask forgiveness of your Lord; verily, He is Oft-Forgiving. He will send rain to you in abundance, and give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers'”}. Seeking forgiveness is also the most spacious door to the Mercy of Allaah, tabaarak wa ta’aala: {‘Why do you not seek forgiveness of Allaah that you may receive mercy?’}. It is also one of the things that takes away the punishment of Allaah; isn’t He, subhaanah, the One who said: {Allaah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness}? So if one seeks forgiveness, the punishment is lifted; and if seeking forgiveness is present, the punishment does not descend: {Allaah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness}.

Seeking forgiveness is also one of the means of bringing good enjoyment, especially when one combines it with repenting. Allaah, tabaarak wa ta’aala, said: {And (commanding you): ‘Seek forgiveness of your Lord and repent to Him, that He may grant you a good provision to enjoy for an appointed term and bestow His Grace to every doer of favor’}. And He said: {Hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and Paradise as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the muttaqoon (the pious), who spend (in the cause of Allaah) in prosperity and in adversity, who repress anger and who pardon the people – and Allaah loves the good-doers. And those who, when they have committed sins or wronged themselves, remember Allaah and ask forgiveness for their sins – and who can forgive sins except Allaah? – and (those who) do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know. For those, their reward is forgiveness from their Lord and Gardens beneath which rivers flow (Paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is the reward for the (righetous) doers}. Look at what Allaah, tabaarak wa ta’aala, has made the consequence of seeking forgiveness and repenting.”

“Al-Fattaah – (the Judge/the Granter of blessings)”

Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Razzaaq al-Badr (hafidhahullaah) comments:

“Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Rahmaan bin Sa’dee, rahimahullaah, said: ‘Al-Fattaah has two meanings. The first meaning is: the One who judges between His slaves, and judges between them with His legislation and by rewarding those who obey (Him) and punishing those who disobey (Him) in the dunyaa and aakhira, as His, ta’aala, statement: {Say: ‘Our Lord will assemble us all together (on the Day of Resurrection), then He will judge between us in truth. And He is the Just Judge, the All-Knower of the true state of affairs’}, and His, ta’aala, statement: {‘Our Lord! Judge between us and our people in truth, for You are the Best of those who give judgment}.

The second meaning is: the One who opens all doors of blessings for His slaves. He, ta’aala, said: {Whatever Allaah grants to people of mercy – none can withhold it}. He grants benefits of the dunyaa and deen to His slaves, and opens the locks upon hearts for those whom He has favored with His Kindness and Care, and showers (the hearts) with knowledge and understanding from Him and realities of faith that rectifiy their conditions and by which they remain upon the Straight Path; and what’s more special is that He grants those who love Him and turn to Him knowledge from Him, spiritual conditions, shining lights and true understanding. And likewise He opens for His slaves the doors of rizq (provision) and the paths of the means, and paves the way for provisions and the means to (these provisions) for the muttaqoon (those who fear Him) from where they can’t imagine, and gives the mutawakkiloon (those who put their trust in Him) beyond what they ask and hope for, and makes easy for them affairs that are difficult, and opens for them doors that are closed.”

“How does a Muslim deal with trials?”

Shaykh Muhammad Sa’eed Raslaan (hafidhahullaah) comments:

“The second step is: sabr (patience) and ihtisaab (hoping for the reward of Allaah).

This patience will place the slave in the ma’eeyah of Allaah, subhaanah (i.e., Allaah will be with him), as confirmed by Allaah’s, jallat qudratuh, statement: {Allaah is with those who are patient}. This is a special ma’eeyah, one of support, help, and it is more special than the general ma’eeyah: {He is with you wherever you are}. This is the general ma’eeyah, as for the special ma’eeyah, it is: {Allaah is with those who are patient}. Likewise, along with this (special) ma’eeyah, Allaah, tabaarak wa ta’aala, has made (the patient one) from those whom He loves: {Allaah loves those who are patient}.

And a person should be certain that with hardship comes ease and that with hardship comes relief, and that Allaah, subhaanahu wa ta’aala, is the One who removes his adversity and distress – {if Allaah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him} – and (a person should be certain) that Allaah’s, tabaarak wa ta’aala, Mercy will encompass him as He, subhaanah, is {the One who sends down the rain after they had despaired and spreads His Mercy}. And He, subhaanah, said: {Allaah will bring ease after hardship}. And He, jallat qudratuh, said: {Indeed with hardship comes ease. Indeed with hardship comes ease}. So the One who brings ease after hardship, removes the hardship, and lifts the distress, it is Allaah, subhaanahu wa ta’aala.

And from His, subhaanah, Absolute Mercy is that He expiates the previous sins from the one who is afflicted with this trial. So a person should know that this trial is only for expiating his sins. And he should know that the reward of the one who is patient is the attainment of Allaah’s Pleasure and Paradise: {Indeed, I have rewarded them this Day for their patience – that they are the ones who are successful}. So Allaah, tabaarak wa ta’aala, has made the reward for patience to be the attainment of Paradise and eternal life in everlasting delight.”

“How does a Muslim deal with trials?”

Shaykh Muhammad Sa’eed Raslaan (hafidhahullaah) comments:

“The steps that the one whom Allaah, tabaarak wa ta’aala, is putting to trial with adversity must follow are summarized in this way:

The first step that a person must strive to take when he is put to trial with adversity is yaqeen (certainty) and ridhaa (being pleased with Allaah). So if something that the soul dislikes comes and if adversity comes, the first step that a Muslim must take when preparing himself to accept that trial of adversity is yaqeen and ridhaa. And it is upon a Muslim to believe firmly that there is another life that is better than this (worldly) life as Allaah, tabaarak wa ta’aala, said: {And the Hereafter is better and more lasting}, and as He, jallat qudratuh, said: {And the home of the Hereafter will be better, and excellent indeed will be the home of the Muttaqeen (the pious)}. So if a person is certain that there is another abode beyond this one that is better and more lasting, this means that this affliction that has come upon him and this adversity that is causing him pain and taking away his well-being, this affliction – no matter how long it lasts – it will eventually end. Because the dunyaa itself is fleeting, so whatever trials, calamities and adversities happen in it, they are fleeting all the more so.

This life is an abode of affliction and trial, thus all the adversities that happen in it will nothing but eventually end. And Allaah does not do anything except for a wisdom, and there isn’t anything in existence that happens without purpose, and Allaah puts a person to trial to test his patience and sincerity. Hence, when one reflects over these with yaqeen and ridhaa, the coolness of yaqeen descends over the fire of the calamity until it extinguishes it, and the coolness of yaqeen and ridhaa remains in the heart then takes away the heat of the calamity that was decreed for this slave.”
