“And We gave him (back) his family, and along with them the like thereof, as a mercy from Us and a reminder for those who understand.
~ Surah Saad, 38:43

Shaykh Ibn Katheer (rahimahullaah) comments:

“{And as a reminder for those who understand}: meaning, for those of intellect so they know that the end result of patience is relief, a way out and ease.”

“And We gave him (back) his family, and along with them the like thereof, as a mercy from Us and a reminder for those who understand.
~ Surah Saad, 38:43

Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Rahmaan as-Sa’dee (rahimahullaah) comments:

“{We gave him (back) his family}: it is said that Allaah, ta’aala, brought them (back) to life for him, {and along with them the like thereof } in this world, and Allaah gave him great wealth; {as a mercy from Us} on Our slave Ayyoob since he was patient, so We rewarded him out of Our Mercy (both) in this world and in the Hereafter; {and a reminder for those who understand}: meaning, so those of intellect will remember the condition of Ayyoob and take it as a lesson, and know that whoever is patient upon adversity, then Allaah, ta’aala, will reward him in this world and in the Hereafter, and respond to his supplication when he calls upon Him.”

the best thing

Asaheeha Translations

“Al-Lateef – (the One Whose Knowledge encompasses the most miniscule, subtle, secretive and hidden matters / the One Who is Kind to His slaves and brings them good from where they cannot perceive)”

Shaykh ‘Abd ur-Razzaaq al-Badr (hafidhahullaah) comments:

“And from Allaah’s Kindness to His slaves is that He decrees their provisions according to His Knowledge of what is beneficial for them, not according to what they desire, for they may want one thing while another thing is better. So He – out of His Kindness for them – decrees the best thing for them, even if they hate it.”

the One who is called upon

Asaheeha Translations

“And your Lord said: ‘Call upon Me, I will respond to you”
~ Surah Ghaafir, 40:60

Shaykh Ibn ‘Aqeel (rahimahullaah):

“This involves (a number of) meanings. First: existence, for the one who is not existent is not called upon. Second: richness, for the one who is poor is not called upon. Third: hearing, for the one who is deaf is not called upon. Fourth: generosity, for the one who is stingy is not called upon. Fifth: mercy, for the one who is merciless is not called upon. Sixth: power, for the one who is powerless is not called upon.”

even more so

Asaheeha Translations

“Is He (not best) Who responds to the distressed one when he calls upon Him and removes the evil and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations? Is there any deity with Allaah?”
~ Surat un-Naml 27:62

Shaykh Muhammad bin Saalih al-‘Uthaymeen (rahimahullaah) comments:

“Meaning: no one responds to the distressed one when he calls upon him except Allaah. So Allaah, ‘azza wa jal, responds to the supplication of the distressed person, even if he is a disbeliever. Even the disbeliever, if he is distressed and calls upon his Lord, He will respond to him. Allaah, ta’aala, said: {And when a wave covers them like shades (i.e. like clouds or the mountains of sea-water), they invoke Allah, making their invocations for Him only. But when He brings them safe to land, there are among them those that stop in between (belief and disbelief). But none denies Our Signs except every treacherous ingrate}. So the distressed person whose need compels him to calling upon Allaah – even if he is a disbeliever – Allaah will respond to his supplication. So what do you think about if he is a believer? Even more so.

Hence, no one responds to the distressed one except Allaah. As for those other than Allaah, ‘azza wa jal, then they may respond or not respond. It may be that you seek help from a person during a hardship yet he does not respond to you or save you. But Allaah, ‘azza wa jal – when you need Him and call upon Him – He will answer you.”
